Permits for Everest Base Camp | EBC Trek You Need to Know 2025/26

The Everest Base Camp (EBC) Trek is one of the world’s most iconic trekking adventures. Towering peaks, Sherpa culture, high-altitude villages, and unforgettable views of Mount Everest- all come together to create a once-in-a-lifetime journey.

But before you set foot on the trail, there’s something you must secure first: your trekking permits.

In this guide, we’ll cover every permit you need to trek to Everest Base Camp in 2025/ 2026, including costs, where to get them, and why they’re required.

1. Visa for Entry to Nepal (Yes, It’s a Permit Too)

Before trekking, you need to legally enter Nepal, and that means securing a tourist visa.

  • Where to Get It: Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu) or land border entry points

  • Types Available: 15, 30, or 90-day tourist visas (extendable)

  • Cost: Starts at USD 30 for 15 days

Without a visa, you can’t enter Nepal- and without entry, you can’t get your trekking permits. So consider this your first and most essential permit.

2. Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit

The EBC trail passes through Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to Mt. Everest, rare wildlife, and stunning alpine landscapes.

  • Where to Get It:

    • Nepal Tourism Board Office in Kathmandu

    • Monjo Entry Gate on the trail (after Lukla)

  • Cost:

    • NPR 3,000 for foreigners
    • NPR 1,500 for SAARC nationals
    • Free for Nepali citizens
  • Why It’s Needed: To protect and maintain the natural ecosystem and support conservation efforts in the Everest region.

3. Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit

Introduced in 2018, this local government permit is required for trekking in the Khumbu region (including Namche, Tengboche, and beyond).

  • Where to Get It:

    • Lukla at the rural municipality checkpost
  • Cost:

    • NPR 2,000 for the first four weeks
    • NPR 2,500 if your trek extends beyond 4 weeks
  • Why It’s Needed: This replaces the TIMS card in the Khumbu region and supports local development projects, infrastructure, and tourism management.

4. Do You Still Need a TIMS Card?

Short answer: Yes.

As of recent updates, TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) cards are required but not mandatory for treks in the Everest region. The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu permit has replaced the need for TIMS for EBC and nearby routes.

However, TIMS cards are still required for other trekking areas in Nepal like the Annapurna and Langtang regions.

Tips for Getting EBC Permits

  • Carry passport-sized photos for permits (at least 2)

  • Bring your original passport for verification

  • Keep your permits handy- you’ll need to show them at checkpoints

  • Apply through a trekking agency if you want everything arranged in advance

  • Plan ahead in peak season (Mar-May & Sept-Nov) to avoid delays

Why Permits Matter for the EBC Trek

These permits aren’t just paperwork- they help:

  • Protect Everest’s fragile ecosystem

  • Support local communities and tourism infrastructure

  • Track trekkers for safety and emergency rescue

  • Ensure responsible, sustainable trekking

When you trek with the right permits, you’re doing your part to preserve the Himalayas and support the people who call them home.
