Itinerary
The journey to the Badimalika Trek begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Dhangadhi, the gateway to Nepal’s Far Western Region. Dhangadhi serves as the economic and logistical hub for Wild West Nepal, making it the perfect staging point for our upcoming wilderness expedition. Upon landing on Dhangadhi, we transport you to the partner hotel, where you can unwind and settle in comfortably.
The rest of the day is reserved for rest and preparation for the long journey ahead toward the remote hills of Bajura. Travelers can explore the local surroundings, interact with the diverse culture of the Far West, and get a first taste of Nepal’s lowland lifestyle. This overnight stop in Dhangadhi plays an important role in acclimatization and logistical preparation before entering the rugged mountainous terrain of Wild West Nepal.
After an early breakfast, the journey continues with an adventurous 4x4 jeep drive from Dhangadhi to Martadi, the district headquarters of Bajura. The drive is a sensory feast of changing landscapes as we climb away from the Terai and follow the winding Karnali and Budhiganga river corridors. We navigate through deep, forested gorges, passing terraced hillsides, cascading waterfalls, and remote highway settlements that offer a glimpse into the classic, rural Nepali lifestyle.
As we push deeper into Bajura district, the air turns crisp and the valley walls grow more dramatic. The final stretch brings us along mountain ridges before descending smoothly into Martadi, the vibrant district headquarters of Bajura. Martadi is a bustling hill town nestled in a valley, acting as the last major outpost of civilization before we enter the true wilderness. The local culture here is rich and deeply rooted in historical Khas traditions, distinct from the central and eastern parts of Nepal. After checking into a local tea house, we have the afternoon to explore the vibrant market lanes, interact with the welcoming locals, and enjoy a fresh, hearty meal to fuel up for our foot trek tomorrow.
Today marks the beginning of the actual trekking journey into the remote wilderness of Badimalika. After breakfast in Martadi, the trail gradually ascends through rugged hill landscapes, traditional settlements, and forested sections that showcase the raw beauty of Far Western Nepal. As we move higher, the air becomes cooler and the scenery more open, revealing sweeping views of surrounding valleys and distant ridgelines.
Along the way, trekkers may encounter grazing animals, seasonal shepherd shelters, and small rest points used by pilgrims heading toward Badimalika Temple. This section of the journey offers a peaceful introduction to the isolation and purity of the region. By late afternoon, we reach Sota Patan, a beautiful highland pasture surrounded by rolling green hills and open alpine landscapes. The campsite here provides a serene atmosphere under the vast Himalayan sky, making it an ideal place to rest and prepare for the higher elevations ahead.
After a peaceful night in Sota Patan, the journey continues deeper into the alpine landscapes of Badimalika. The trail gradually ascends through open meadows, gentle ridges, and wide grazing fields that define the unique beauty of this region. This section of the trek is particularly scenic, offering a true sense of wilderness and solitude. The landscape is largely untouched, with only seasonal herders and pilgrims passing through. The combination of silence, natural beauty, and wide-open horizons creates a deeply immersive trekking experience.
By afternoon, we arrive at Tribeni Patan, one of the most significant highlights of the entire Badimalika Trek. Tribeni Patan holds deep spiritual significance as a sacred confluence where three holy alpine rivers meet. For religious travelers, this high plateau is a highly revered pilgrimage site where bathing in the crisp, icy waters is believed to cleanse the soul and wash away sins. This expansive alpine meadow serves as a key resting and spiritual base before the ascent to Badimalika Temple. The area is peaceful, sacred, and surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery.
This is the most important and spiritually significant day of the entire journey. Early in the morning, we begin the ascent toward the sacred Badimalika Temple, located at an altitude of 4,219 meters. The trail climbs gradually through high alpine terrain, offering breathtaking views of surrounding mountains, rolling grasslands, and endless skies.
Reaching the temple is a deeply rewarding experience for both trekkers and pilgrims. Dedicated to Goddess Bhagwati, Badimalika Temple holds immense religious importance for devotees across Nepal. The atmosphere here is peaceful and powerful, surrounded by panoramic Himalayan scenery that enhances the spiritual feeling of the site.
After spending meaningful time at the temple, offering prayers or simply absorbing the natural beauty, we descend back to Tribeni Patan for overnight stay. The return journey allows time to reflect on the achievement and the spiritual essence of the trek.
After a memorable experience at Tribeni Patan and the sacred visit to Badimalika Temple, we begin our descent back toward Martadi. As we gradually descend, the environment changes from high-altitude grasslands to forested slopes and scattered rural settlements. Passing again through Sota Patan, trekkers can reflect on the spiritual and natural beauty experienced during the ascent. By early afternoon, we will arrive in Martadi.
Upon arriving back in Martadi, we will hop into a 4x4 jeep. We quickly load up our gear and begin a fascinating long-distance drive heading southwest into the deeper hill districts of Wild West Nepal. By evening, we arrive in Dadeldhura, fondly known as the "Queen of the Hills" in this region. This historic town is famous for its crisp pine forests, refreshing climate, and the ancient Ugratara Temple. After days of wilderness camping, checking into a comfortable local hotel with modern amenities, hot showers, and a warm bed feels exceptionally rewarding as we relax and share stories of our successful trek.
On our final day, we depart the serene pine-covered ridges of Dadeldhura, driving back down the winding Mahakali and Bhimdutta highways. As we lose altitude, the crisp alpine air gradually transitions back into the warm, tropical breeze of the Terai plains as we smoothly roll into Dhangadhi city.
Upon arriving at the Dhangadhi airport, we will board our return flight to Kathmandu. Our representative will be then escort you back to your hotel or assist with your onward international flight connections.

The Badimalika Trek can be undertaken during different seasons of the year, but the most rewarding time is undoubtedly the monsoon season (July to August), followed by spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Unlike many trekking destinations in Nepal where monsoon is considered less favorable, Badimalika comes alive during the rainy season, transforming the highland meadows into a spectacular green paradise.
Monsoon Season (July to August)
Monsoon is widely regarded as the best season for the Badimalika Trek. During this period, the famous grasslands of Tribeni Patan and Sota Patan turn lush green, creating breathtaking landscapes often compared to the "Switzerland of Nepal." Wildflowers bloom across the meadows, streams flow at their fullest, and the entire region appears vibrant and refreshing.
This season also coincides with the renowned Janai Purnima Festival, when thousands of pilgrims travel to Badimalika Temple to pay their respects and seek blessings. Trekkers visiting during this time can witness religious ceremonies, cultural gatherings, and the spiritual atmosphere that makes Badimalika one of Nepal's most important pilgrimage destinations.
Spring Season (March to May)
Spring offers pleasant temperatures, blooming rhododendrons, and clear mountain views. It is an excellent season for trekkers who prefer moderate weather and quieter trails before the monsoon pilgrimage season begins.
Autumn Season (September to November)
Autumn provides stable weather, crisp mountain air, and excellent visibility. The landscapes remain green after the monsoon rains, making it another popular time to explore the remote beauty of Far Western Nepal.
For travelers seeking the perfect combination of natural beauty, spirituality, and cultural experiences, the monsoon season offers the most unique and memorable Badimalika Trek experience.

-
Trail Conditions: The route includes uneven paths, ridgelines, and occasional steep ascents and descents.

Weather Variations: Weather can change quickly, with warmer temperatures at lower elevations and colder conditions higher up.
-

How to Protect from Leeches on the Badimalika Trek During Monsoon Season?
During the monsoon season, the lower and mid-altitude forest sections of the Badimalika Trek can have leeches, especially in damp and grassy trails. While they are not dangerous, they can be uncomfortable for trekkers if proper precautions are not taken. With a few simple measures, trekkers can easily avoid or minimize leech bites throughout the journey.
Key Tips for Protection from Leeches
-
Wear long trekking pants and full-sleeve clothing to reduce exposed skin.
-
Use leech socks or tuck pants into socks/boots while walking through forested areas.
-
Apply saltwater, Dettol, or antiseptic sprays on socks and shoes as a natural repellent.
-
Avoid sitting directly on wet grass, bushes, or forest floors during breaks.
-
Regularly check legs, socks, and shoes during and after trekking sections.
-
Remove leeches gently using salt or antiseptic rather than pulling them directly.
By following these simple precautions, trekkers can comfortably enjoy the lush monsoon beauty of Badimalika, including the green landscapes of Tribeni Patan and Sota Patan, without major discomfort from leeches.

Key Places of the Badimalika Trek
The Badimalika Trek takes travelers through some of the most scenic and spiritually significant locations in Far Western Nepal. Among the many highlights of the journey, Badimalika Temple, Tribeni Patan, and Sota Patan stand out for their cultural importance, natural beauty, and unforgettable trekking experiences.
Badimalika Temple (4,200m / 13,780ft)
Badimalika Temple is the ultimate destination of the trek and one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in western Nepal. Dedicated to Goddess Bhagwati, the temple attracts thousands of devotees during the annual Badimalika Festival. Surrounded by vast alpine meadows and panoramic mountain views, the temple offers a unique blend of spirituality, culture, and natural beauty.
Tribeni Patan (3,700m / 12,139ft)
Tribeni Patan is a breathtaking high-altitude meadow that serves as the main resting point before visiting Badimalika Temple. Known for its expansive grasslands, peaceful atmosphere, and spectacular Himalayan scenery, it is considered one of the most beautiful locations along the trek. The area also holds religious significance and is an important gathering place for pilgrims during festival seasons.
Sota Patan (3,200m / 10,499ft)
Sota Patan is a scenic alpine pasture situated along the trekking route between Martadi and Tribeni Patan. Surrounded by rolling hills and open landscapes, it provides a tranquil overnight stop for trekkers and pilgrims. The peaceful environment and stunning natural surroundings make Sota Patan an ideal place to experience the untouched beauty of Wild West Nepal.
Khas Culture in the Far Western Region of Nepal
The Far Western Region of Nepal, including Bajura, Bajhang, Doti, and Karnali, is the heartland of the ancient Khas culture, one of the oldest cultural identities in Nepal. This culture has deeply influenced local language, traditions, festivals, and daily lifestyles, making the Badimalika Trek both a natural and cultural experience.
Khas communities are known for their simple mountain lifestyle, strong community values, and close connection with nature. Life is often centered around farming, livestock, and seasonal movement to highland pastures such as Sota Patan and Tribeni Patan. Traditional customs and village practices are still well preserved in these remote areas.
A key highlight of Khas culture is the famous Deuda dance, a circular folk dance performed during festivals and gatherings. Accompanied by traditional songs in a call-and-response style, Deuda reflects unity, storytelling, and emotional expression, and is a strong symbol of social harmony in the region.
For trekkers, experiencing Khas culture along the Badimalika route adds a meaningful cultural dimension to the journey, offering a glimpse into the heritage of Wild West Nepal.
Sustainable and Responsible Tourism in the Badimalika Region
The Badimalika Trek takes you through some of the most untouched and spiritually significant landscapes of Far Western Nepal, where nature and local culture remain closely connected. From high alpine meadows like Triveni Patan to remote rural settlements, this region is still largely unspoiled, making it even more important for trekkers to travel with care and responsibility.
We encourage all trekkers to be mindful of their environmental impact throughout the journey. Simple actions such as avoiding littering, reducing single-use plastics, respecting sacred sites like Badimalika Temple, and being considerate toward local communities go a long way in preserving the beauty and authenticity of this region for future generations.
At Best Heritage Tour, we follow a strict “Leave No Trace” approach across all our trekking routes, ensuring that we leave the mountains as clean and natural as we find them. In addition, we also plant a tree in the name of traveler (upon request) who joins us, supporting reforestation efforts and contributing to a greener and more sustainable Nepal.
