Detailed 12-Day Everest Base Camp Trek Itinerary for 2027

Our tested 12-day framework prioritizes natural altitude progression. Below is the step-by-step breakdown from Kathmandu back to Kathmandu.

Day 1: Flight from Kathmandu/Ramechhap to Lukla (2,860 m) & Trek to Phakding (2,610 m)

  • Trek Duration: 3 to 4 hours

  • Distance between Lukla & Phakding: 8 km

  • Highlight: Scenic flight into Tenzing-Hillary Airport; first steps along the Dudh Koshi River.

Our journey begins with an early morning transfer for the flight to Lukla. During peak trekking windows like October, flights frequently depart from Ramechhap Airport (Manthali) to minimize air traffic congestion in Kathmandu. Upon touching down at the dramatic airstrip in Lukla, we meet our porter team and begin descending toward the Dudh Koshi River valley. The trail winds through peaceful pine forests, traditional Sherpa hamlets, and carved mani stones before reaching the riverside village of Phakding.

Day 2: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m)

  • Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hours

  • Distance between Phakding & Namche: 11 km

  • Highlight: Crossing the iconic Hillary Suspension Bridge; first view of Mount Everest.

Following the course of the Dudh Koshi River, we cross high suspension bridges draped in colorful prayer flags. After checking in at the Sagarmatha National Park entry point in Monjo, we cross the iconic Hillary Suspension Bridge. From here, we begin a steady, steep ascent through pine forests to reach Namche Bazaar, the historical and cultural trading capital of the Khumbu region.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar (3,440 m)

  • Activities: Hike to Everest View Hotel (3,880 m); explore the Sherpa Culture Museum.

  • Highlight: Unobstructed vistas of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Everest.

Acclimatization is essential for a safe high-altitude journey. Rather than remaining inactive, active acclimatization encourages your body to adjust to lower oxygen levels. We hike up to the Everest View Hotel for a morning tea with panoramic mountain vistas, visit the traditional village of Khumjung, and return to Namche to browse local bakeries, gear shops, and museums.

Day 4: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,860 m)

  • Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hours

  • Distance between Namche & Tengboche: 10 km

  • Highlight: Tengboche Monastery; sunset over Ama Dablam.

The trail contours along high ridge lines with breathtaking drops into the Imja Khola Valley. After descending to Phunki Tenga for lunch, we tackle a switchback climb through rhododendron and pine forests to Tengboche. Famous for housing the largest Buddhist monastery in the Khumbu, Tengboche offers a stunning backdrop featuring the spire of Ama Dablam (6,812 m).

Day 5: Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche (4,410 m)

  • Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hours

  • Distance between Tengboche & Dingboche: 11 km

  • Highlight: Transition into the alpine zone; views of Island Peak and Cholatse.

Leaving the tree line behind, the environment shifts to high alpine scrub and open valley meadows. We cross the Imja River and trek past stone-walled fields to reach Dingboche, a settlement nestled beneath the towering face of Lhotse and Ama Dablam.

Day 6: Acclimatization Day in Dingboche (4,410 m)

  • Activities: Acclimatization hike to Nagarjun Hill (5,100 m).

  • Highlight: 360-degree views of Makalu, Lhotse, and the Imja Valley.

Our second structured acclimatization day involves a steep ascent to Nagarjun Hill (5,100 m) directly above Dingboche. This climb offers high-altitude conditioning and rewards trekkers with views of Makalu (8,485 m), the world's fifth-highest peak. We return to the teahouse by afternoon to rest and hydrate.

Day 7: Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche (4,940 m)

  • Trek Duration: 4 to 5 hours

  • Distance between Dingboche & Lobuche: 11 km

  • Highlight: Thokla Pass memorial site dedicated to lost mountaineers.

We climb slowly past the wide valley plain toward Thukla (Dughla). From here, a steep ascent brings us to the top of Thokla Pass, home to stone memorials dedicated to climbers and Sherpas who lost their lives on Everest. The trail then levels out, following the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier to Lobuche.

Day 8: Trek from Lobuche to Gorak Shep (5,164 m) & Everest Base Camp (5,364 m)

  • Trek Duration: 7 to 8 hours

  • Distance between Locuche, Gorak Shep & EBC: 15 km

  • Highlight: Reaching Everest Base Camp; standing beside the Khumbu Icefall.

An early start brings us across glacial moraine and rocky debris to Gorak Shep, the final teahouse outpost on the route. After dropping off our heavy packs and securing a quick meal, we push forward along the glacial ridge toward Everest Base Camp (5,364 m). Standing on the Khumbu Glacier, surrounded by prayer flags and looking up into the Khumbu Icefall, marks the ultimate peak of our journey. After celebrating and capturing photos, we return to Gorak Shep for the night.

Day 9: Trek Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar (5,545 m) & Descend to Pheriche (4,370 m)

  • Trek Duration: 7 to 8 hours

  • Distance between Gorak Shep, Kala Pathar & Pheriche: 16km

  • Highlight: Sunrise over Mount Everest from Kala Patthar.

Pre-dawn light signals our ascent of Kala Patthar (5,545 m), the highest altitude reached on this itinerary. While Base Camp itself sits directly under the shoulder of Everest (blocking the summit from direct view), Kala Patthar delivers an unobstructed view of Mount Everest's summit cone, Nuptse, and Changtse as the sun rises. We descend to Gorak Shep for breakfast, then trek back down to the warmer elevation of Pheriche.

Day 10: Trek from Pheriche to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m)

  • Trek Duration: 6 to 7 hours

  • Distance between Pheriche & Namche: 20 km

  • Highlight: Re-entering forest zones; warm teahouse hospitality in Namche.

With richer oxygen levels filling your lungs at lower altitudes, descending feels swift and energizing. We retrace our steps past Pangboche and Tengboche, descending through rhododendron forests before ascending back into Namche Bazaar for a well-deserved rest.

Day 11: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,860 m)

  • Trek Duration: 6 to 7 hours

  • Distance between Namche & Lukla: 19 km

  • Highlight: Final day of trekking along the Dudh Koshi River; celebration in Lukla.

Our final trekking leg descends the steep hill out of Namche, crossing high suspension bridges back through Phakding to Lukla. In the evening, we gather with our mountain guide team and porters to celebrate the successful completion of the trek.

Day 12: Flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu/Ramechhap

  • Activity: Morning mountain flight; arrival transfer to Kathmandu hotel.

We board an early morning flight out of Lukla back to Kathmandu (or Ramechhap with road transfer back to the capital). Once in Kathmandu, you are transferred to your hotel to relax, shop for souvenirs in Thamel, or enjoy a farewell dinner.
