Upper Mustang Permit Updated: $50/Day for Foreign Tourists

Nepal has announced an exciting update for all foreign travelers planning to visit the culturally rich and majestic region of Upper Mustang. This restricted Himalayan destination—bordering China’s Korala border—has long been considered one of Nepal’s most exclusive trekking routes due to its permit system.

In a recent decision shared by the Government of Nepal’s spokesperson, Minister Jagadish Kharel, the trekking permit rules under the Immigration Regulation 2051 have officially been amended. With this decision, foreign visitors will now pay USD 50 per day during their stay in Upper Mustang.

What’s the Good News?

The previous rule required every foreign traveler to pay USD 500 upfront for a mandatory 10-day permit, regardless of the number of days they actually spent there. Now, this obligation has been removed.
Under the new policy:

You only pay for the exact number of days you spend in Upper Mustang.

The minimum 10-day requirement has been eliminated.

The daily fee is fixed at USD 50 per person.

This adjustment makes Upper Mustang more flexible, more accessible, and more appealing for international travelers who want to explore the area at their own pace.

Why Was This Change Important?

Local leaders from Lo Ghekar Damodarkunda and Lomanthang had been requesting a review of the restricted-area policy, stating that the earlier system discouraged many visitors.
Although they hoped for complete removal of restricted-area status, they welcomed the government’s decision as a positive step toward promoting tourism.

Impact on Tourism

Upper Mustang is part of the Annapurna Conservation Area and is one of Nepal’s most culturally preserved regions. Due to the high permit cost, only about 3/4% of Mustang’s annual 150,000+ foreign tourists reached Upper Mustang.
With the new daily-fee system, more visitors are expected to explore its ancient monasteries, unique Tibetan-influenced heritage, and spectacular desert landscapes.

This is a golden opportunity for travelers seeking authentic Himalayan heritage, spirituality, and adventure without the previous financial constraints
