Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp by Road: The 2026 Overland Guide

For decades, the "Gate to Everest" was synonymous with a tiny, white-knuckle airstrip in Lukla. But as we move into 2026, a quiet revolution is happening in the Solukhumbu region. More travelers than ever are asking: "Can I get to Everest without flying?"

The answer is a resounding yes.

At Best Heritage Tour, we have seen a significant shift toward the Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp by Road route. Whether you are an adventure seeker looking to follow in the footsteps of the original 1953 expedition or a traveler who simply prefers the steady ground of a Jeep over a mountain flight, this guide is for you.

Why Choose the Road Route in 2026?

The classic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla is iconic, but it isn’t for everyone. Here is why our clients are increasingly choosing the overland journey:

1. Say Goodbye to Flight Cancellations

Lukla’s Tenzing-Hillary Airport is notorious for weather-related delays. A single cloud can ground flights for days, throwing your entire itinerary into chaos. By traveling from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp by road, you regain control of your schedule.

2. Superior Acclimatization

The biggest danger on the Everest trek is Altitude Sickness (AMS). Flying to Lukla drops you at 2,860m instantly. Driving to Salleri (2,360m) and trekking gradually through the lower valleys gives your body an extra 3-4 days to adjust. Our statistics show that road-route trekkers have a significantly higher success rate of reaching Base Camp.

3. Cultural Immersion (The "Real" Nepal)

The flight skips over the heart of the Solu region. On the road, you pass through traditional Rai, Tamang, and Sherpa villages like Salleri, Kharikhola, and Nunthala. You’ll see terraced farms, local bazaars, and ancient monasteries that 90% of Everest trekkers never see.

The Route: How to Reach Everest Base Camp by Road

There is no road that goes directly to the Base Camp (and we hope there never is!). Instead, you drive as far as the road permits and then join the classic trail.

Phase 1: The Drive (Kathmandu to Thamdanda/Surke)

The journey begins with an early morning departure from Kathmandu.

  • The Vehicle: We typically use private 4WD Jeeps. While local buses are available, the 8-10 hour journey to Salleri is much more comfortable in a private vehicle.

  • The Road: You’ll travel via the BP Highway, a scenic winding road through the mid-hills.

  • The End of the Road: As of early 2026, the road has extended past Salleri and Phaplu, reaching Thamdanda and even near Surke. From here, the "road" ends and your boots take over.

Phase 2: Joining the Main Trail

From Surke (located just below Lukla), you hike for about 4-5 hours to reach Phakding. At this point, you are officially on the "Classic EBC Trail." You have successfully bypassed the Lukla airport and are now heading toward Namche Bazaar.

Essential Tips for the Overland Trekker

1. Motion Sickness

The road from Kathmandu to Salleri is famous for its "hairpin" turns. If you are prone to motion sickness, we highly recommend taking medication before the drive starts.

2. Permit Requirements

Even if you don't fly to Lukla, you still need the same permits:

  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit: (Payable on the trail).

  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: (We can arrange this for you in Kathmandu).

3. Pack for Dust

The newly constructed roads can be dusty in the dry season (March-May). Keep a buff or a face mask handy for the Jeep portion of the trip.
