Can one Trek to Tsum Valley Only Without Manaslu Circuit in 2026?

One of the most frequent questions we receive at Best Heritage Tour is from travelers who are captivated by the spiritual allure of the "Hidden Valley of Happiness" but are intimidated by the grueling 5,106m Larkya La Pass.

The short answer is: Yes, absolutely. You can experience the magic of Tsum Valley as a standalone adventure without completing the full Manaslu Circuit.

In fact, opting for a Tsum Valley-only trek allows you to slow down, immerse yourself deeper into the local Tsumba culture, and explore ancient monasteries without the physical pressure of a high-altitude pass crossing. In this guide, we’ll explain how this works and provide the perfect 10-day itinerary for this sacred journey.

The Standalone Tsum Valley Experience

While many trekking agencies bundle Tsum Valley as a "detour" or "side trip" to the Manaslu Circuit, it is a destination that truly deserves its own spotlight. When you trek Tsum Valley solo (meaning without the circuit, not without a guide), you enter a world that feels distinctly different from the rest of Nepal.

Why Trek Tsum Valley Separately?

  • Lower Altitude Risks: Unlike the Manaslu Circuit, which climbs to over 5,000 meters, a standalone Tsum Valley trek usually tops out at Mu Gompa (3,700m). This makes it a "Moderate" trek rather than "Strenuous," significantly reducing the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

  • Cultural Depth: Instead of rushing to reach the next camp on the circuit, you can spend extra time in villages like Chhekampar and Nile, witnessing 13th-century traditions and the unique "Shyakya" (non-violence) philosophy of the valley.

  • Cost and Time Efficiency: A full Manaslu-Tsum combination takes 18-22 days. A standalone Tsum trek can be completed in just 10 to 12 days, making it accessible for those with limited holiday time.

10-Day Standalone Tsum Valley Itinerary

At Best Heritage Tour, we have designed this itinerary to maximize your time in the "restricted" upper reaches while keeping the daily walking hours manageable.

Day 1: Drive from Kathmandu (1,400m) to Machha Khola (760m)

Drive Duration: 8-9 Hours

The journey begins with a scenic but adventurous drive. We leave the hustle of Kathmandu and head west towards the Gorkha district. The road winds along the Trishuli and Budhi Gandaki rivers, offering glimpses of rural Nepalese life - terraced farms, small bazaars, and suspension bridges. We overnight at Machha Khola, the gateway to the Manaslu region.

Day 2: Trek from Machha Khola (760m) to Jagat (1,300m)

Trek Duration: 6 Hours

Our first day on foot follows the Budhi Gandaki river upstream. We pass through Khorlabeshi and the natural hot springs at Tatopani. After crossing several suspension bridges, the valley narrows into a dramatic gorge. We end the day in Jagat, a beautiful stone-paved village where your restricted area permits are first officially registered at the police checkpoint.

Day 3: Trek from Jagat (1,300m) to Lokpa (1,800m)

Trek Duration: 6-7 Hours

Today, we officially leave the main Manaslu trail. After reaching Philim, we head north through a lush forest. Lokpa is the first village within the Tsum Valley region. It is often called the "Gateway to Tsum," and from here, you get your first majestic views of the Shringi Himal.

Day 4: Trek from Lokpa (1,800m) to Chumling (2,300m)

Trek Duration: 5 Hours

The trail descends into the Lungwa River valley before a steep climb through pine and rhododendron forests. As we reach Chumling (Lower Tsum), the landscape opens up. Here, you will see the three main monasteries of the lower valley: Panago Gumba, Mani Dhungyur, and Gurwa Gumba.

Day 5: Trek from Chumling (2,300m) to Chekampar (3,060m)

Trek Duration: 5-6 Hours

Entering Upper Tsum, the valley widens significantly. Chekampar (also known as Chokhangparo) consists of two twin villages situated on a flat land. The houses here are made of stone with unique Tibetan-style architecture. You are now in the heart of the Tsumba culture, surrounded by the Ganesh Himal and Himalchuli peaks.

Day 6: Trek from Chekampar (3,060m) to Mu Gompa (3,700m) and Return to Lama Gau (3,300m)

Trek Duration: 7-8 Hours

This is the spiritual pinnacle of the trek. We head to Mu Gompa, the highest and oldest monastery in the valley, located very close to the Tibetan border. The sense of isolation and peace here is overwhelming. After exploring the monastery and enjoying the high-altitude views, we descend to Lama Gau for a quieter evening.

Day 7: Trek from Lama Gau (3,300m) to Chumling (2,300m)

Trek Duration: 6 Hours

We begin our return journey, but the experience is far from over. Descending allows you to see the valley from a different perspective. We stop at the famous Rachen Gompa, a nunnery filled with incredible Buddhist murals and statues, before settling back in Chumling.

Day 8: Trek from Chumling (2,300m) to Sirdibas (1,500m)

Trek Duration: 6 Hours

Retracing our steps, we exit the Tsum Valley gate and descend back toward the Budhi Gandaki River. We overnight in Sirdibas, a traditional village that offers a final night of authentic mountain hospitality before we rejoin the more frequented paths.

Day 9: Trek from Sirdibas (1,500m) to Machha Khola (760m) via Jagat & Tatopani

Trek Duration: 7 Hours

A long but rewarding descent. We pass through the checkpoints at Jagat and can stop for a final soak in the Tatopani hot springs to soothe our trekking muscles before reaching Machha Khola.

Day 10: Drive from Machha Khola (760m) to Kathmandu (1,400m)

Drive Duration: 8-9 Hours

We board our jeep for the return journey to the capital. As the mountains fade into the distance, you’ll find yourself reflecting on the profound silence and spiritual energy of the Hidden Valley.

Important Considerations for Standalone Tsum Trekkers

  • Permits are Still Mandatory: Even if you aren't doing the full circuit, Tsum Valley is a restricted zone. You need the Tsum Valley Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP).

  • No Solo Trekking: Government regulations require a minimum of two trekkers and a licensed guide. At Best Heritage Tour, we can help solo travelers find a trekking partner or join an existing group.

  • Respect the "Shyakya": Please remember that the valley is a sacred "no-kill" zone. Enjoy the nutritious local vegetarian meals - they are part of the pilgrimage experience!
