Which Mobile Network Works Best on EBC | Ncell or NTC?

If you’re trekking to Everest Base Camp (EBC), staying connected can be important — whether for sharing photos, contacting guides, or checking weather updates. Two major mobile networks operate in Nepal: Ncell (a private company) and NTC (Nepal Telecom, the government-owned provider). But which one performs better on the route to Everest Base Camp?

Network Coverage on the EBC Route

  • Ncell:
Ncell offers good coverage in the lower regions of the EBC trek, including Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar. However, the signal tends to weaken as you move higher — beyond Tengboche and Dingboche, coverage can be patchy or disappear completely.

  • NTC (Nepal Telecom):
NTC provides wider coverage in higher altitudes, especially from Namche Bazaar to Gorak Shep. Many teahouses use NTC for their Wi-Fi connection. Though data speed can be slow, it’s often the more reliable network above 4,000 meters.

Internet Data and Call Quality

  • Ncell:
Offers 4G and 3G in the lower sections. The data connection is usually stable around Namche Bazaar but fades quickly afterward.

  • NTC:
Operates mostly on 3G or 2G networks in the higher areas, but calls tend to connect more consistently than Ncell at high altitudes.

Wi-Fi and Alternatives

Even if your SIM doesn’t work everywhere, most teahouses and lodges along the EBC route offer paid Wi-Fi services through Everest Link or AirLink. These systems use satellite internet and cover major trekking stops.

Recommendation for Trekkers

For the best connectivity, we recommend:

  • Buy both Ncell and NTC SIM cards in Kathmandu before your trek.

  • Use Ncell in lower regions and NTC from Namche upwards.

  • Keep in mind that signal quality can vary depending on weather and terrain.

Final Thoughts

While NTC generally performs better at higher altitudes, Ncell offers faster data in the lower sections. Carrying both ensures you’ll stay connected for most parts of your Everest Base Camp journey.
